Two Rope Shibari Ties

On a tight budget, but want to start playing with rope patterns? Two ropes is enough to get you started.

One Rope Shibari Ties - 5 Meters

A 5 meter rope is normally used to finish ties, or to tie arms or legs to a bed post, but it is also useful for practicing knots, and tying some very basic ties.

  • Person wearing a light purple jumper with hands bound by 5meter natural shibari rope.
  • Person sitting cross legged on a yellow mat tied into agura using 5meter jute beige rope.

One Rope Shibari Ties - 8 Meters

There is an entire practice of tying, untying, and retying with a single rope called Ipponawa 一歩縄 (sometimes refered to by Western riggers as Ichinawa 一縄), but alongside this there are lots of simple ties you can achieve with one rope including a basic futomomo shibari. A one rope chest harness, or a rope bra.

All the ties shown in our sex for rope article use just one rope

Three Rope Shibari Ties

Many people start with a three rope kit is because some hip harness and chest harness need three ropes (or four if the person you are tying is a little larger).  While this still won’t be enough to let you combine multiple ties this is enough rope to practice most rope patterns.

Four Rope Shibari Ties

With four limbs, four ropes makes perfect sense, but you can also use four ropes to tie a two rope chest harness giving you one rope for each leg, or two ropes to tie the legs together. This is also a good number of ropes to use for tying Ebi Agura.

Eight Rope Shibari Ties - Full floor kit

I have jumped straight to 8 ropes here, because this is where things get serious. At this point you can tie pretty much all floor based shibari patterns, you can use 2 ropes on each leg, and a three or four rope chest harness, or you can tie someone to furniture.  For people who have decided shibari is defiantly for them, but do not want to be going down a suspension road this this is a really solid choice and will give you the versatility you need.

*while this is enough rope for some suspensions, the suspensions that are possible with 8 ropes are harder on the person in the rope that ones which use more ropes, so although you can do a suspension with 8 ropes - it is better for those new to suspension to start with more ropes - and more experienced riggers often prefer a fuller rope bag to give themselves more versatility.
